Conservation of the ceiling

In 2005, extensive conservation and cleaning of the painted roof, together with repair and repainting of the internal walls, was carried out thanks to grant aid from the Heritage Lottery Fund and supporting donations.

The work was carried out under the supervision of architect Alan Greening of Southwold and the contractor was R & J Hogg of Coney Weston. The conservator was Tom Organ of the Wall Paintings Workshop, Faversham.

The aim of the cleaning was to leave an even surface, bringing out the richness of the colours and removing the layers of detracting grime. The emphasis was on conservation rather than restoration. Although some repair work was necessary, this was a minor aspect of the project thanks to the quality of Mildred Holland's paint. The work took five weeks.
